Editorial standards

How the House Wingman Editorial Team researches and maintains every guide.

Primary sources first

Every guide lists its sources at the bottom of the page. We start from primary sources: state insurance regulators such as the Texas Department of Insurance, federal agencies such as the EPA, building-science and safety groups such as the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, and manufacturers' own guidance. We use industry associations for general reference and say so.

What we won't publish

  • Invented prices, statistics, reviews or testimonials. Cost guides publish only figures we can cite to at least two sources, with the date they were checked.
  • Claims that any contractor is licensed, insured, vetted or guaranteed. We don't verify that, and you should check it yourself.
  • Pages that only swap a city name. We don't publish city-by-city pages.
  • Advice to do dangerous work. Where a job involves electricity, gas, heights or contaminated water, we say to call a professional.

Dates and updates

Each guide shows when it was published and last updated. We review guides when a source changes and correct errors as soon as we confirm them.

Independence

If a page ever offers to connect you with a participating contractor, the contractor or a partner network pays us for that introduction. That never decides what a guide recommends, and the page will disclose it.
